Bind It Like a Bookmaker!

Hands-On Book Binding for Kids

Children will learn how real books are made by creating their own mini-journals! Using simple materials, they’ll fold, sew, and decorate a handmade book to take home.

Setup (30 minutes before program): 
Arrange tables into craft stations and place a sample finished book at the front. Prepare “book kits” for each child (5 folded sheets of paper, 1 cardstock cover, pre-punched holes). Set out shared supplies — yarn, blunt needles, tape, scissors, glue sticks, markers, and stickers. 
Program Flow (60 minutes): 
Welcome & Storytime (10 min): Read How This Book Was Made and briefly discuss how books are assembled (pages, spine, cover). 
Demonstration (5 min): Show three simple binding methods — staple, yarn stitch, and accordion fold. 
Book Binding Activity (25–30 min): Guide participants through folding, binding, and decorating their books. Staff assist with threading or tying yarn. 
Show & Tell (10 min): Kids share their finished books; encourage them to add stories or drawings at home. 
Wrap-Up (5 min): Hand out take-home instruction sheets and clean up materials.
